/vrpg/ is a place to discuss all types of role-playing video games, including single-player, multi-player, and massively multi-player, turn-based and real-time action, western-style and JRPG.

Does this mean RPGs are banned on other video game boards? No! /vrpg/ is just a separate board specifically focused on RPGs where discussions about your favorite games can thrive.

Please familiarize yourself with the rules and remember to use the spoiler function where appropriate!

Please note that, like /v/, "Generals"—long-term, one-after-the-other, recurring threads about a specific game are not permitted on /vrpg/. Such threads belong on >>>/vg/.

I mean, you are melting frozen people. I'm pretty sure you have to choose who to melt and they all tell you about Final Emperor.

A thread for posting about and sharing obscure RPG's you've played and want to discuss or mention on the off chance someone here has played it too, or goes and tries it out. Can be anything from licensed and published games, to fan-made modules for other games, to shareware, to full on indie titles.

Post'em if you got'em.

i remember many ages ago (i think it existed after fallout 1 for a few years) of some australian lone developer who made his own fallout clone but, instead of nuclear war, it was an alt-future with UFOs or something like that.

anyway, he only made a demo of it and then discontinued it because it would be too much work to create the whole thing.

have no idea what the name of it was and tried finding it a few times but with no success. maybe some of the players here might remember it.

I have been tracking Landtraveller for years to see if would become popular, but it didn't and now the game is free to play with no multiplayer option. It is like Minecraft meets furries, that meets RPG Maker (the game has an rpg maker atmosphere and the dev used to post on rpg maker forums). I took a look and it is not for me, I prefer playing with a bunch of other players. If someone is interested in the single-player mode, go ahead. Free on Steam.

I figured out what this was - Omega Syndrome.

I've been playing through this game and I've begun to realize, after hearing so much about it for years, it is only "hated" by Final Fantasy fans because it is simply too much of an RPG. Too many secrets, too many dungeons, too many gameplay options, too many ways to build characters, etc. It's just too much for your average mush-brained Final Fantasy player, and I think that is hilarious.

Here is what I liked:
>characters look good
>beeing able to make rules and auto fight
>changing your jobs and how you want and how you like
>fun secrets and bazar
>hunting mission that ends in fighting one super boss with some story tidbits
>having secret summons
>dungeons beeing actually bigger than they appear

Here is what I didn't like
>although fixed in zodiac (not open certain item boxes or you won't get the zodiac spear)
>not beeing able to save sets of commands to swap them out
>story is nonesensical after the half (and even then is not even that fun, oh no my husbando died I am so sad and walk with le skimpy minirock)

>Star Ocean, SaGa, Kingdom Hearts, all games for idiots
I would actually like to hear your list of JRPGs that are apparently not for idiots. It also seems incredibly moronic to include Star Ocean considering it was basically a different company for the majority of its lifespan. I also always considered the holy unrighteous hate it gets as a litmus test to see who actually likes JRPG and has a good judge of what's important which is to say you're demonstrating the opposite.

>Haven't played an FF game in a while and this is seriously making me question if Final Fantasy has just always been shit. Is FF the worst JRPG franchise ever?
Yes. There's very few good FF games depending on what you're looking for.
XII, X-2, XI, V & II are the interesting ones but if you're not into it post ATB then yeah, you're probably not going to enjoy it unless you get into the story.

My problem with Elminage 1's dungeons is that they are intricate but feel somewhat procedurally generated and have next to no placed content. It takes a lot of busywork to explore every nook and cranny but there's little reward. With CoH2 I can see chests in the distance and try to find out how to reach them, or simply how to reach the other side of the dungeon to progress to the next region. That's another thing I like a lot about CoH2, it feels like Wizardry 6-8 / Grimoire where all the maps are connected together and you go to different regions on foot like it's an open world rather than just selecting them from a menu like in Elminage or Dungeon Travelers 2.

Skyrim is a game that greatly benefits from simply not using healing spells or potions. A different game when you gotta use all the other options, actually focus on the game. Healing spells especially is like baby mode difficulty.
>>
>>3463767
I noticed my enjoyment of RPGs improved significantly once I just started to freely use consumables and items with charges without giving a fuck about hoarding them.

You sometimes get access to more gameplay mechanics and features you'd miss otherwise in the case of potions with cool effects or items with cool charges, you don't have to waste time juggling inventory slots and trying to work out a way to fit everything you weren't planning on using anyways, because you burned through it, and if you could've gone through the whole game hoarding every single consumable item and not needing to save it for some crucial point anyways then you're not going to miss them being gone.
>>
>>3467851
DeS had infinite health items that could be farmed, you could carry 99x of each herb (equivalent to light, medium, heavy heal potions in other games). No cooldown and you could spam them as fast as you wanted.

DS introduced estus, you could carry 5 or 10 of them, using them plays an animation thats quite slow, locks you in place, can be interrupted, and if you run out you only get more by visiting a bonfire, but that respawns all killed enemies, so you couldn't cheese by clearing shit out, getting more potions, then running back. However there were still consumable items you could use to full heal that could be farmed and stacked. But much more rare.

DS2/DS3 had estus, as well as more frequent and common healing consumables that could be bought/farmed/stacked.

Rikku in FFX is a benchwarmer or the best character, depending on how much of a hoarder the player is.

Just finished my first run of 1 (complete 100%) and 2 (skipped all dlcs beside the ice one).
First one is good imo, not a lot of choices, but the story works, my main complaint would be that, without metagaming, it can be frustrating because it pushes you to missions that are very hard at the start. But I enjoyed it, will try another build in the near future.
Second one feels rushed, lots of choices but no effects, the boat gets tedious pretty soon, the endings are so moronic that destroying the world is the only one that made some kind of sense to me... Dialogue is embarrassing with characters making quips all the time, the romances are awful and so poorly written that why bother, barely any choice from game 1 had effects on the game...
Overall underwhelming and killed my interest in avowed. I don't give a fuck about what happens in the setting after poe2.

The MC is actually kinda mediocre until late game when he gets some absurdly strong swords.
Meanwhile during the early game he suffers from the lack of equipment. He starts with a middle sword and doesn't get to upgrade it until chapter 4, almost halfway through the game.

Like another anon said, level 15+ before promoting a character.
Maybe look up the unrecruited characters if you're worried about missing them. Otherwise it's pretty easy to go into blind.

Nah it's an honest question. I've put thousands of hours into mmos and I'm burned out. I still find FF11 interesting and I've watched a review of the modern mechanics a few months ago. I believe you can hire npcs now but the overall mechanics haven't changed much? Xp loss on death, etc. I think it's a cool game but I missed out on my chance to enjoy it. Just curious. Looking for a real answer from a player.
>>
>>3462777
I mean the .hack games are the most literal interpretation of this. You play as a kid stuck inside an MMO.
>>

>Xp loss on death
This was removed a long time ago, you don't even need to rest to recuperate anymore. You can get through it all very fast if you want to be fast.
https://www.bg-wiki.com/ffxi/Quickstart_1-119_Guide
It should go on sale for $10 in a few days probably, then you'll have 14 days free and there's probably going to be a free login campaign for the remainder of the month but you'll have to sub first and it'll be prorata
>>
>>3469515
If you do end up trying it out, take the time to set up Ashita or Windower, I like Ashita v4, and dgvoodoo. An Xbox SeX controller is recommended. If you have questions ask here or on /vm/ and I will help.

>Offline XI when?
I pray every day. I'm hoping CBU III put Komoto and a few others onto the job but I don't think it'll happen soon.
Komoto will prob go back to his usual XIV role in Dawntrail and the other XI devs will continue to work on the new adventuring foray/exploration zone.
Private servers still suck for this, it's hardlocked into CoP with some treasures atm with a bunch of stuff still not supported.
>>3469159
>4 months playing 12 hour per day tho right?
Depends on how efficient you are. For a first timer it takes a while, for vets going through following a guide it's not too bad.
RoE & RoV dramatically boost levelling speed, time it well with challenges and you're zooming.
I got a bit of a comparison of the levelling process recently. It took me a good amount of time to get to 70 on WAR without doing all that, but going through and doing MNK after a bunch of rhapsodies stuff, not needing to do limit break quests and spamming lvling in parties in zi'tah and other zones I hit 70 really fast. The gain experience challenge is very broken for this along with the exp boosts from RoV.

Ultimately how much value you get from an XI sub depends on your free time. I get why the sub can feel bad. If you only play a few hours a week it's a steep sub price but if you play a couple hours every day it stings less.
>>3469518
I'll also +1 on Ashita V4. Takes a bit of time to learn but it's definitely worth it. Same with DGvoodoo if you want stuff like clean nearest neighbour texture filtering.
Ashita V4 will require you to prob use discord but only to browse the V4 plugins channel, once you get the repos of the extra plugins you want you don't really need to use it too much.

I bought the Switch port of this. I've only played Monster Rancher 3 on PS2 and that was over 20 years ago, and apparently that' like the worst game in the series even though I remember liking it for awhile.

Me and all my friends fucking absolutely loved Monster Rancher 2 back in the day, we'd play it everyday for hours laughing and smiling. But we all thought Monster Rancher 3 was the worst thing in the universe, we seethed with the force an exploding sun because of how much of a pathetic letdown the 3rd game was

How the hell does Monster Rancher 2 work on the Switch? Seems like you'd have to play it on a console that can read CDs, as you need CDs to spawn monsters, right?
>>
>>3467925
>just bought this, what do I think of it?
Worst threads, by far. Did you at least play a little of it to hold a conversation over?
I’ll be nice and throw you bone. Do NOT look up too much about this game unless you want to turn it into a mindless mechanical process. If you want to have the most fun you can, accept that you will flounder and fail, and probably (definitely) miss stuff. Look things up sparingly, if at all.
There’s a wonderful community that spend decades solving this game and they did a great job. But once you know the code any chance of casually enjoying it is pretty much over because you’ll have to purposefully avoid the very easy method to be completely efficient. But when you’re ready for that day, you’ll have a whole other set of fun breaking the game.
>>
>>3468498
Honestly you can avoid having to learn all the mechanical autism if you just make sure to use a Nuts Oil and a Mint Leaf once a week. That alone should keep your Lifespan fairly stable.

Yup, pretty much.
A lot of the appeal of MR is that sort of 'unknown' factor, that in turns makes the game feel more complex and reacting to what you do.
The way monsters respond to things, their different quirks, and especially their animations, are all designed in a way to give the illusion that the monsters are as real as they can be. Never being too sure of what could happen next is one of the core appeals of it casually.
There's fun to be had knowing all the mechanics, but it's one of those things where once you learn them, it's really hard to not see everything for what it is, at least in the game you learned.

A light-hearted JRPG loosely based on the historical age of discovery, where people live on floating islands, and the developers biggest stated goal was to give players the freedom to explore. A unique game with surprising features you'd never expect to find in a JRPG and a rarely matched spirit of adventure. Does Skies of Arcadia still hold up?

Galcian has used the crystals to pull the lost continent of Soltis from the depths, used it to nuke Valua, and holed himself up inside with a giant force field, so its probably a good time to regroup. After getting back to our base all the pirates we helped out/beat up over the course of the game show up to lend us a hand in our time of need, and it doesn't take long before we have an entire armada of our own, so its time to kick some butt. Galcian meets our forces in a giant island sized floating fortress, and after wading through the line of battle, we engage it in ship to ship combat until it is disabled, then it becomes a dungeon which we break into then fight our way to the bridge to beat the hell out of this dude once and for all.

With the loss of Galcian, Ramirez goes insane, which is bad news because he's in control of the silver gigas, a weapon capable of wiping out the entire planet. We enter Soltis through the very first dungeon we encountered on our journey, which was a broken off chunk of the continent all along and has rejoined with it. As we get further into the Soltis things get more alien and dangerous, first navigating the crumbling ruins of a dead civilization then hopping between teleporters as we get deeper into its still beating and technologically advanced guts. After finally reaching Ramirez and facing him in battle, he merges with the silver gigas and becomes a giant death star. (yes really) These fights are seriously not easy, even with shitloads of consumables one slip up and its over. The pressure is so intense that if you fall down the boss will never let you get your momentum back and just crush you.
