/vrpg/ is a place to discuss all types of role-playing video games, including single-player, multi-player, and massively multi-player, turn-based and real-time action, western-style and JRPG.

Does this mean RPGs are banned on other video game boards? No! /vrpg/ is just a separate board specifically focused on RPGs where discussions about your favorite games can thrive.

Please familiarize yourself with the rules and remember to use the spoiler function where appropriate!

Please note that, like /v/, "Generals"—long-term, one-after-the-other, recurring threads about a specific game are not permitted on /vrpg/. Such threads belong on >>>/vg/.

I heard a schizo theory a very long time ago that every Final Fantasy is actually meant to be satirical, and since then it's stuck with me so much that I can't help but feel like there's some truth to it. Please tell me I'm not alone here.

Segagaga and Moon: Remix RPG Adventure be considered satirical?
The former makes a comment on Jap work culture inside Sega, but in an exaggerated way as playing like an RPG whole. The latter I heard was about the player cleaning up after the RPG hero, who would've been the protagonist, causing trouble or something.

The dev lore I’ve heard is that sakaguchi intended for final fantasy to be his last game before retiring but it was so successful that the execs ordered a sequel. He was checked out so he phoned in FFII not intending for it to be successful, but it ended up being another hit. Each time a sequel was ordered the team (under sakaguchi’s guidance) would make it more absurd than the previous installment. This culminated with FFIV in which the party travels to the moon on a flying whale. If it’s is true then I’d guess they probably realized they had something special and decided for take it seriously around FFVI or VII.

Because most of the time it speaks to being lazy. It's just an easy path for literally anyone to put out at least SOMETHING, and usually that means it's barely a game.

It's correlative, not causative, though I know lots of people object to to stock assets on principle.
>>
>>3467914
The premise and the initial introduction make you think it's an excuse for masturbation. The kingdom building, combat system, economics and warfare sequences are all great and thought out, though. The metaphysics that get introduced are also pretty cool.

Genuinely one of my favorite games, not because it's the best game ever made, but because I think it's the closest game to the ideal dream game people always warn you not to make when you first open rpg maker.

Technically, he did pray for someone to come and separate "Alice" and his new friend but the "joke" is that it's actually "Alice"'s prayer that was responsible of summoning Leaf.
It's his thing, everyone including his son think he sinned, and he did, but, it's not a sin that did much.

Agree on most things but I will add a couple of my opinions:

Quina is shit.

The second half of the game doesn't utilize the main party and focuses soley on Zidane and Garnet. Yes they got more focus on the first half but its still unfortunate their arcs pretty much end halfway through the game.

Necron came out of nowhere. Nothing can defend this. They had a chance to tie it with ExDeath from FFV which would have been a sweet nod, but no.

Agree about stealing though its annoying that it tempts you so since the main character is the thief.

Kuja is an underrated imo and should not have been redeemed. People only hate him cause he's girly but he literally wins every battle against the heroes.

Chocobo hot and cold is a guilty pleasure and it also helps it leads you to the superboss.

>People only hate him cause he's girly
My problem is less with Kuja himself as with the writing around him.
>haha yes I'm the sinister bad guy and I'm going to do mysterious bad guy stuff for obscure personal reasons that won't make any sense for 2-3 more discs because it's all tied into the japvoluted metaphysics of the setting. And in the meantime you're going to watch Steiner gradually learn how to not be an oblivious retard all the time.
Yes I'm being glib I'm not in the mood to go in depth.
>Yes they got more focus on the first half but its still unfortunate their arcs pretty much end halfway through the game
To me, that's part of the problem. With all the focus on side characters, Zidane and Kuja seem to be going through the motions for too much of the story.

The only issue with Elden Ring as a pantheon is that all the other gods outside the Greater Will are so untouched in the story that you can't really talk about them as a pantheon.

But it's basically Greek Mythos in terms of the exploits of the demigods and Zeus/Radagon cheating on/divorcing Hera/Rennala with mortals/Extremely Complex Masturbation.
>>
>>3468190
Why are you saying they’re gross and horrible like that’s a bad thing?

>>

The fact that they aren’t talked about is the cool part

I find it extra funny the party ends the fight thinking they've successfully convinced Idea to stop, when the real truth is there probably isn't enough time to run through more hero candidates because the next Calamity is due soon and waiting around a meadow.

This and so much more is why I couldn't enjoy Kludge.
Nothing felt real. Nothing felt thematically connected. And ultimately, there felt like there were no stakes.
I think at least that portion of how I feel about Kludge is fairly objective.
Subjectively, I think Kludge failed in the scenes, too- but this largely has to do with how I didn't find the majority of the cast appealing.
In general, the side-cast was much more interesting to me than the main cast.

Dita was badly handled, and I think is sort of the epitome of Hakika's "Don't want to write X as a bad character" syndrome. I feel like her whole character would have greatly benefited from being in a position where she could actually take charge like the protagonist she's supposed to be, instead of the awkward story half measure we got. Any number of things could have and would have been better.

Kuu is fine, and I can understand the overall theming hakika went for. Not in any means bad, just not my preference.

Lusica is also fine, but feels a little bit over the top. I think I was a little disappointed that her role as a mechanic didn't actually mean much- and this kind of bleeds over into my disappointment with how robots were handled in Kludge. It's the land of machines. Why don't the machines matter? Why aren't the robots cool? Yeah I get Ordowald's decaying, but still.

Yubeil? 10/10, can think of no criticism at this time, other than maybe "We should have gotten her in Colony instead"- but unfortunately, the story demands that that wouldn't have made sense. The alternative to that is "Should have been in a better game."

Before getting into the game, I thought I would like Lusica the most, but I actually ended up liking Yubeil and Yolnaya the most. Vyner and Reda were great too. Dita’s alright, her purple ass is good just like Maria’s, but she leaves a lot to be desired. Lusica and Faria were the biggest disappointments of the cast if you ask me, they’re just compete weirdos.
Kludge’s cast had a problem with not bringing back any returning characters, so the cast seems weak on its own when compared to awake and colony’s all-star cast. There was a big lack of an audience surrogate character like Rabi in colony too, which hampered the story. Imagine if instead of Faria, we got Auris in the party at the halfway point. It would’ve been a million times better. You can just imagine it yourself.
And with this line of thinking, I can guarantee thirst’s cast will be much better just because they have both Nazuna and Uula to bounce off of.

Yeah. 2 is pretty good, but 1 is just a slog.

A light-hearted JRPG loosely based on the historical age of discovery, where people live on floating islands, and the developers biggest stated goal was to give players the freedom to explore. A unique game with surprising features you'd never expect to find in a JRPG and a rarely matched spirit of adventure. Does Skies of Arcadia still hold up?

What version of this game should I legally purchase?

I've been playing through this game and I've begun to realize, after hearing so much about it for years, it is only "hated" by Final Fantasy fans because it is simply too much of an RPG. Too many secrets, too many dungeons, too many gameplay options, too many ways to build characters, etc. It's just too much for your average mush-brained Final Fantasy player, and I think that is hilarious.

It's pretty fun, and less underpowered than I thought it'd be, though I'm getting much more mileage out of the water totem I'm able to summon than combo'ing decaying touch with regen. Petrifying touch is honestly a huge help though, never played dorf before and I'm glad I decided to this time.

It's kinda weird though; when an enemy has chilled for 2 turns, I can't freeze him with another application of chilled like I could if he only was chilled for 1 turn. Also, should I dip my water staff into a poison barrel for a little extra damage, or is that gonna fuck me over in the long run? I noticed that if I melee an enemy with a poison staff and they're standing on ice/water, it turns the surface into poison

Was thinking of getting NWN2 just to play Mask of the Betrayer (given its reputation). I've never played a NWN game though. Should I be fine to skip the OC? I watched an hour or two of both on YT and the OC looks like the cheesiest fantasy schlock, whereas the opening section of MotB was kino as fuck. Also, more importantly, the modules for these games are a big selling point, so are there any that you guys like?
